Kryocraft publishes tutorials for web infrastructure – hosting, domains, servers, WordPress and the products companies operate on – and provides free calculators that work exclusively in the browser.

What Kryocraft is

Most hosting guides are written to sell hosting. Comparison tables have biased sorting, "lists of the best" change with the payment system, and the features that limit you are ignored to make a sale seem simpler.

Kryocraft is a hosting guide that doesn't have to sell anything. There is no alternative to what we offer; therefore, we have no interest in withholding information.

We write for people who research their first infrastructure choice and get increasingly frustrated with every article, knowing that each has an agenda to sell them something. And we write for people who chose already and suspect that they didn't do it right.

What we cover

• Domains: selecting a name, DNS, transfers, and renewals, and what's not included in renewals.
• Web hosting: shared, managed, and cloud plans, their limitations, and how to determine if you've chosen the right level of control and resources.
• VPS: allocating the server size based on measurable needs, features that constitute "management," and server hardening practices that mitigate most issues.
• Dedicated servers: cases when raw power is a better choice and the reliability trade-off that comes with such decisions.
• WordPress: performance tweaks that provide most value and upkeep practices that prevent most issues.
• Web development: custom code versus themes, project scoping, and advice for people who have to brief developers.
• Web applications and e-commerce: budgeting for the costs associated with a store after fees and applications.
• Digital marketing: allocating the budget between organic and paid tools based on revenues.

How we choose what to write about

Everything we write is requested. We do not speculate about keywords and write articles based on their search volume. We answer questions that either we get asked directly or see asked often enough on forums.

Every guide has to pass three criteria before publishing.

1. Does it answer the question asked? The answer should be visible near the beginning of the article or explicitly stated if it is something that cannot be summarized in a sentence or two. If the question requires nuance, we state that up front. For example, questions of the type "what is the best…" get responded to with "it depends," followed by a consideration of the factors that determine the answer.
2. Are the numbers double-checked? We fact-check everything, including figures, rates, and the limitations of particular systems. Numbers that require an estimate at the time of publishing are explicitly marked as such.
3. Does it address the failure scenarios? We write guides, not just promotional materials.

We try to think through what can go wrong with the suggested solutions and address them in the article. We discuss the expenses that are easy to overlook and the decisions that are challenging to reverse.

The materials get updated when hosting conditions change, usually annually. Guides get prioritized based on popularity rather than time since the last update.

Standards

Some of our writing is deliberately opinionated. "Buy managed hosting unless you have someone who can restore a server at 3 am in your team" is more helpful to many people than "consider your team's technical competency when choosing between managed and shared hosting."

We state outright when an opinion is given as a recommendation and why it is supposed to help the visitor. You are always free to disagree with us.

If you find a mistake or an estimate that has become significantly outdated, you can let us know via the contact form (see below). We treat corrections as improvements to the page and are not bound by any special rules beyond fixing what is wrong.

The tools

All pages under the /tools/ directory run in the browser and use vanilla JavaScript. Nothing you enter in them gets sent to the server or saved anywhere. You do not have to log in or confirm your subscription, and data you enter does not get exported elsewhere.

This notice is a technical explanation rather than a guarantee. The tools are designed to run locally for convenience and privacy, not security reasons. Tools do not run software not needed for their operation, but that does not extend to the rest of the website. See the privacy policy for details.

Compensation for recommendations

Kryocraft carries display advertising, which is what pays for the hosting, the domain and the time spent writing. That is the whole of the business model.

What we don't do is take money to say things. There are no affiliate links, no sponsorships, no paid placements and no compensated recommendations of any kind. No hosting company can pay to be named here, pay to rank higher in a comparison, or ask to see a draft before it goes out.

That distinction matters. The ads you see are served by an ad network and have nothing to do with the companies discussed in our guides, so there is no reason for us to soften a criticism or inflate a recommendation. If a host is expensive, or a plan has a limit the sales page hides, we say so.

A consequence of this policy is that Kryocraft is a small site with limited content. We update guides regularly, but we do not publish more than a few dozen pages a year. We strive for accuracy and update guides as necessary.
